  8. Excitation dynamics of micro-structured atmospheric pressure plasma arrays.H. Boettner, J. Waskoenig, D. O'Connell, T. L. Kim, P. A. Tchertchian, J. Winter & V. Schulz-von der Gathen - unknown
The spatial dynamics of the optical emission from an array of 50 times 50 individual microcavity plasma devices is investigated. The array is operated in argon and argon-neon mixtures close to atmospheric pressure with an ac voltage. The optical emission is analysed with phase and space resolution. It has been found that the emission is not continuous over the entire ac period, but occurs once per half period. Each of the observed emission phases shows a self-pulsing of the discharge, with (...)

Open peer commentary on the target article “Who Conceives of Society?” by Ernst von Glasersfeld. Excerpt: Von Glasersfeld’s presupposition that all organisms are isolated subjective knowers can thus remain viable within a framework that sees the personal and social as mutually informing. Implying that isolated knowers coordinate the ways in which they “bump” into one another – and that this coordination impacts the kinds of perturbations that arise within them – constitutes a perfectly rational variation on von Glasersfeld’s theory of (...)

The Role of the Christian Philosopher. [REVIEW]J. D. Bastable - 1958 - Philosophical Studies (Dublin) 8:246-246.
In his 27-page Presidential address Father A. Wolter draws a balance-sheet of the current investigations of the various empirical and intellectual factors which produce our common assent to the axiom of causality—followed by the short address of this year’s Medalist, Professor Y. R. Simon on the exasperating joys of a philosopher’s vocation. The general theme of the Christian philosopher is pointedly posed by Father P. L. Hug upon the indisputable fact that Scholastic philosophers have little communication with other philosophers, underlining (...)

    Existence, Existenz and Transcendence. [REVIEW]D. C. J. - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (4):767-767.
Along with Charles Walraff's The Philosophy of Karl Jaspers, Schrag's work is the second book-length study of Jaspers' thought in as many years. As such it is very welcome, for Jaspers' philosophy has not yet been fully explored in English. And now that his three-volume Philosophie has been translated, we should see a great reawakening of interest in this distinguished German thinker. Schrag's book is an exposition of Jaspers' notion of the "Encompassing", that pivotal notion in his thought which refers (...)

    Philosophy of Existence. [REVIEW]D. C. J. - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (3):557-557.
One can only agree with Editor John R. Silber's observation on this little volume that it is "the finest introduction to Jaspers' own comprehensive philosophy...." Overshadowed in this country by the great attention currently given to Heidegger, the importance and power of Jaspers' thought has not yet been appreciated by English-speaking philosophers. Far from being opposed to the natural sciences, Jaspers-who began his intellectual life as a psychiatrist--says that without a grasp of science the philosopher is "like a blind man." (...)

This is a collection of essays and lectures which have all been published previously. Heidegger prefaces the volume with a series of remarks, written in 1967, which elaborate upon the title Wegmarken. The path in question is what he has called on numerous occasions his Denkweg. The path is the way of thinking into the truly thought-worthy. The path goes back into what was once thought out and is now covered over, and forward into what is to be thought out (...)

In a previous paper we have shown that in quantum chromodynamics the gluon propagator vanishes in the infrared limit, while the ghost propagator is more singular than a simple pole. These results were obtained after angular averaging, but in the current paper we go beyond this approximation and perform an exact calculation of the angular integrals. The powers of the infrared behaviour of the propagators are changed substantially. We find the very intriguing result that the gluon propagator vanishes in the (...)

It just felt right: The neural correlates of the fluency heuristic ☆.Kirsten G. Volz, Lael J. Schooler & D. Yves von Cramon - 2010 - Consciousness and Cognition 19 (3):829-837.
Simple heuristics exploit basic human abilities, such as recognition memory, to make decisions based on sparse information. Based on the relative speed of recognizing two objects, the fluency heuristic infers that the one recognized more quickly has the higher value with respect to the criterion of interest. Behavioral data show that reliance on retrieval fluency enables quick inferences. Our goal with the present functional magnetic resonance imaging study was to isolate fluency-heuristic-based judgments to map the use of fluency onto specific (...)

This rational unity of the universe disappeared, when the dome of the heaven broke down and the stars moved aimlessly in the space. The conception of a general space, serving as stage for all beings, remined untouched. This view is wrong. Angiosperm phylogeny, floral morphology and pollination ecology.A. D. J. Meeuse - 1972 - Acta Biotheoretica 21 (3-4):145-166.
The different aspects of floral evolution—Angiosperm descent, floral morphology and pollination ecology—are discussed on the basis of the anthocorm theory of the angiospermous flower. Opposed ideas are critically compared and rejected mainly on account of several inconsistencies and flaws in old floral concepts. Floral evolution passed from a very early phase of dicliny, anemophily and aphananthy of the anthocorm to a phase of incipient entomophily soon associated with a partial sex reversal within the anthocorm. This second phase culminated in the (...)

    Sixty-five years of theories of the multiaxial flower.A. D. J. Meeuse - 1972 - Acta Biotheoretica 21 (3-4):167-202.
A critical appraisal of the theories founded on the theorem of the multiaxial flower , shows an evolution fromWettstein's original version of 1907 to various hypotheses founded on the the same theme and partly derived from the Wettsteinian doctrine. A number of circumstances such as semantic inconsistencies, but principally the choice of inadequate archetypes, prevented the success of the theory of a polystachyous floral region, because the deductions and interpretations emanating from this concept were not sufficiently convincing to defeat the (...)

Ontology engineering is mainly done by domain experts who are specialists in their domain but have, if at all, limited knowledge in logics, computer science, or analytic philosophy. The literature on formal ontologies and biomedical ontologies is neither suited nor intended to serve as an educational resource that would help domain experts to become good ontologists. Existing educational resources focus rather on ontology tools and languages than on good practice. The purpose of the GoodOD guideline is to pave the road (...)
